Company History

1997

Venture Steel is established with an initial focus on providing JIT service of slit coil for automotive parts manufacturers.

2010

Venture Steel is acquired by The Giampaolo Group, a leading North American metal recycler and service provider for producing mills and metal consumers.

2011

Venture Steel acquires Gatsteel, a leading Canadian supplier of sheet and coil with a focus on construction, appliance, HVAC, energy and a variety of other non automotive end users of metal.

2012

Venture Steel de Mexico is opened, our Greenfield location in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

2014

Venture Steel USA opens for business with a sales office in Buffalo, New York.

2017

Yellen Metals acquired in Buffalo, NY

2020

Automatic Steel acquired in Barrie, ON

2021

Venture Steel expands acquiring Olympic Steel Detroit.

Our Leadership

President

Tony Kafato

With over 30 years of experience in metals distribution, Tony has garnered an abundant knowledge in all functional areas, including sales, purchasing, finance, operations, and logistics. Tony has been serving as Venture Steel’s President since shortly after the Giampaolo Group acquired it in 2010. His focus has been building a customer centric, service-oriented culture that exceeds all stakeholder expectations.

Vice President, Sales & Technical Services

Scott Woodland

Scott Woodland joined Venture Steel in 2012 and has over 23 years of experience in the steel industry, spanning all aspects of the manufacturing and distribution process. With a technical background, Scott can identify and provide solutions for our customer’s product-related pain points. He is responsible for building long-term sales growth.

Vice President, Operations

Claudio Cortina

Claudio Cortina joined Venture Steel in 2010 with over 20 years of metals distribution experience. His career began at Samuel, Son & Co., where he spent 16 years in roles with increasing levels of responsibility in quality, sales, and ultimately in an operations management position. Focusing on lean manufacturing and maintaining world-class standards, Claudio manages all Venture Steel production facilities.

Vice President, Finance

Scott Spence

Scott Spence joined Venture Steel in 2014 and has over 20 years of experience in the service center industry, first starting in 2001 with Samuel, Son, and Co. where he accumulated extensive knowledge of the metals industry. As the Vice President of Finance for Venture Steel, Scott is responsible for the finance, IT, and treasury departments. Scott’s objective is to use his ability to build and develop key functioning areas, enabling future growth for Venture Steel.

Director, Human Resources

Kevin Small

Kevin Small has over 25 years of experience as a leader in Human Resources, having held previous roles at Chrysler, Toyota, Canadian Tire, and Maple Leaf Foods. Tasked with building a team that will deliver on the opportunities of tomorrow, Kevin is leading a cultural transformation that will leverage Venture Steel’s solid foundation as one of the ‘Best Managed Companies in Canada.

Director, Purchasing

Stefano Giacoboni

Stefano Giacoboni has over 25 years of steel industry experience spanning both recycling and distribution sectors. Stefano has been leading the purchasing group at Venture Steel for over ten years, having a deep knowledge of all North American Mills and their capabilities. He ensures Venture Steel builds and maintains strong vendor relationships while guiding our purchasing team to minimize our total inventory ownership cost.

The Giampaolo Group was founded over 50 years ago in Toronto, Ontario. Since established, the organization has evolved into a multinational integrated metal corporation. Keen on environmental, social, and corporate governance, the Giampaolo Group focuses on harvesting waste within the metal ecosystem by operating within the recycling, manufacturing, and IT asset disposition space. Giampaolo Group Inc. is continuously expanding and looking for new ways to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to the recycling industry.
